Youth dies in police custody

LAHORE

A youth died on Friday, allegedly after being tortured by CIA Cantt police during interrogations.

CIA police arrested Aqib Saleem of Wafaqi Colony sometime back in connection with a murder case registered in Johar Town police station. Aqib’s family alleged that he died during interrogation. Police officials, however, claimed that Aqib had committed suicide by hanging himself.

The incident came to the notice of senior police officials when family members protested in front of the police station and chanted slogans against the police.

North Cantt police have registered a murder case against an ASI, a head constable Khalid Ferdos and a constable Muqaddas Hussain and two others, including Akbar Ali and Shabbir Hussain on the complaint of Maqbool Ahmad of Wafaqi Colony.

DIES: A 27-year-old man died in a local hospital Friday, almost three days after he was shot at and injured in the limits of Manawan police station.

According to Manawan police, Syed Shafaat Shah of Lakho Der, a tailor by profession, had a minor conflict with Mir Zafar who had come to his shop almost three days back and exchanged harsh words over a minor issue.

Later, accused Zafar whipped out his weapon and shot at him. As a result, Shafaat received fatal bullet wounds.

The injured Shafaat was rushed to a local hospital where he died.

Police removed the body to the morgue for autopsy and registered a case against Zafar on the complaint of the victim’s brother.

MAN FOUND DEAD: A 46-year-old unknown man was found dead in the Shahdara police station area on Friday.

Some passersby informed the police about a man lying unconscious at a pavement. Police reached the spot and rushed the victim to a local hospital where he died. Police told that he looked like a beggar and might have died of cold weather. Police shifted the body to morgue for autopsy.

ACCIDENTS: At least 527 road traffic accidents were reported in Rescue 1122’s Provincial Monitoring Cell in all 36 districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours; in which 10 lives were lost and 396 serious injured were shifted to different hospitals of relevant district. However, some 218 victims sustaining minor injuries were provided first aid on the spot.

OPEN COURTS: Lahore police officers arranged open courts in mosques located in their jurisdictions on Friday.

SP Sadar arranged an open court in Jamia Masjid Islamia Hanfia, Township, DSP Old Anarkali arranged an open court in Jamia Masjid Al-Noor, DSP Mughalpura in Jamia Masjid Lal, DSP Barki in Jamia Masjid Azizia Adda Hadyara, DSP Model Town in Jamia Masjid Sher-e-Rabbani, DSP Ichhra in Madrissa Jamia Asharfia, DSP Muslim Town in Jamia Masjid Tayyaba Wahdat Colony, DSP Gulshan-e-Ravi in Jamia Masjid Abdullah Bin Masood and DSP Township arranged an open court in Jamia Masjid Khair-ud-Din, Johar Town.

The officers listened to the public complaints and issued the directions on the spot. Lahore police has entertained more than 3,700 applicants in open courts.

Dacoit gang busted: The Sabzazar police claimed to have arrested two members of a dacoit gang and recovered two pistols, 15 mobiles and Rs. 200,000 from their possession on Friday.

Accused were identified as Khadim Hussain and Babar Zaman.

The gang was busted by a special team. Arrested accused were history-sheeters and many cases had been traced against them.

Further investigation is underway. DIG Operations Dr. Haider Ashraf has announced commendatory certificates for the special team.
