SHC moved over three ‘custodial killings’

SUKKUR: The wife of a man, who along with his son and another relative, is allegedly under illegal detention of the Sukkur police, filed a petition in the Sindh High Court, Sukkur bench, for the release of the victims and an inquiry against the police into the “extra-judicial killing of her son and two other persons a few days ago”.

Kareemat Khatoon Shaikh, wife of Bukhshal Shaikh, through Advocate Athar Iqbal Shaikh, filed the petition on Tuesday stating that her son, Pervez, had contracted a freewill marriage with Parveen Shaikh on Aug 25 which was not approved by the woman’s family.

She stated that the woman’s relatives had been threatening the couple forcing them and her (petitioner’s) other family members to hide in a Shikarpur area far away from the village where the hostile side had its influence. An application for protection was also filed in the high court on Aug 29, she submitted.

The petitioner said that police along with some private people took away Pervez and Parveen, along with Bukhshal, Ali Sher (another son of the petitioner) and Punjal (her relative). A few ago, she said, Pervez and Punjal, along with an unknown man, were shot dead by police, who claimed it to be a result of an encounter with criminals. The police also got them buried through the Edhi volunteers in Nawan Goth as unclaimed bodies.

The SHC bench issued notices to the Sukkur and Ghotki SSPs, Mirpur Mathelo SHO and other respondents for Sept 14, a date earlier fixed for the hearing of deceased Pervez Shaikh’s plea for protection.

The petitioner’s plea for the handing over of the bodies to their respective heirs and release of her family members allegedly in police custody was fixed for Wed­nesday (Sept 9) for a decision on its maintainability.
