IGP to take action against cops submitting old reports to court
Karachi
The Sindh High Court directed the IGP on Monday to conduct an inquiry against police officials who, instead of making any progress in missing person cases, were filing old reports.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Mohammad Saeed against the illegal detention of his brother-in-law Mohammad Shoaib who was taken away from Gulzar-e-Hijri on April 13, 2014.
The petitioner alleged that his brother-in-law was picked up by the law-enforcement agencies.
The Memon Goth police, DSP Syed Pervez Ali Shah and the SSP Investigation-II East Zone filed their reports on the efforts they had made to ascertain the whereabouts of the missing person.
The court, after going through the reports, observed that the second one was not signed by the SSP East. The court observed that time and again it has been noted that investigation officers furnished the same reports they had submitted in previous hearings by simply changing the dates.
An SHC division bench headed by Justice Irfan Saadar Khan directed the provincial police chief to conduct an inquiry into the affair either himself or assign the task to a police official not below the rank of a DIG to figure out why there had not been any progress in the case and why old reports were being filed.
The court directed that the IGP should submit a report within 15 days and warned that the police chief could be called in person to explain the matter if its orders were not complied with. The hearing was adjourned till February 8.
