“Guinea: waiting for justice” – Victims of State violence testify

| 4 October 2016
(Conakry, 27 September 2016) Seven years after the 28 September 2009 massacre, FIDH and OGDH want to pay tribute and listen to the thousands of victims of the Guinea state violence. The two organisations invited the English photographer Tommy Trenchard to meet with the victims who they have been supporting since 2009 in their quest for justice.

Tommy Trenchard took photos of them in the street at night, usually on the scene of the crimes, where, in one day their lives were turned upside down. His portraits show the vacant but determined look of people who, in their quest for justice, were able to surpass their personal fears and plunge back into story of their past. Painful tales that they agreed to tell, so that they may never happen again.

Tommy’s work led to the creation of the exhibit Guinea: waiting for justice that will be presented at the Franco-Guinean Cultural Centre in Conakry from 27 September to 28 October 2016 and in a book of photos with a preface by Fatou Bensouda, the ICC Chief Prosecutor. All the photos and testimonies  (in French and in English) are available on the website: waitingforjustice.fidh.org.

The opening of the exhibition will take place Wednesday 28 September in the presence of Dimitris Christopoulos, new FIDH President, who was elected this summer by the FIDH 178 member organisation in Johannesburg. This trip, his first as president, will be an opportunity for him to remind the Guinean authorities of the urgent need to move justice forward for the sake of the victims of the 28 September Massacre.

FIDH and OGDH have been fighting impunity in Guinea since 2011. The two organisations filed as plaintiffs in three large-scale national legal proceedings and are now accompanying some 500 victims in their quest for justice before the Guinea courts.
