FIDH campaign for human rights defenders in jail

Dear Friends,

We are proud to present the international FIDH campaign  #ForFreedom dedicated to human rights defenders in jail.

#ForFreedom is a participatory campaign to increase media attention and speed up the release of arbitrarily imprisoned human rights defenders. It is YOUR campaign!

#ForFreedom offers an original, and most important, a viral tool to mobilise international public opinion through the social networks. It focuses on:

  • a powerful illustration to create awareness and encourage the internet-users to embrace the social networks to draw media attention to human rights defenders and thereby speed up their release;
  • a campaign website, freedom-defenders.org  to enable national citizens to contact decision-makers directly and hence get the defenders freed faster.

It has been designed as a lasting tool and we will have many opportunities to keep it going.

We are attaching a detailed manual, but here is a sample of the main actions that you could carry out to contribute to the campaign’s successful launch:

1) Transmit the campaign

  • On Twitter by tweeting:

  • On Facebook by posting  this message on your page :

Throughout the world today, hundreds of #humanrights defenders are arbitrarily jailed. We mustn’t forget them!  We speak out, they walk out,  (+ picture of the campaign in English) #ForFreedom freedom-defenders.org

2) Join our international appeal on Thunderclap to make as much noise as possible: https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/9969-forfreedom?locale=en

3) Donate your Twitter or Facebook profile photo : + http://twibbon.com/support/forfreedom-3

4) Take a picture of yourself showing the #ForFreedom signboard and the name of a defender , Publish the photo on the social networks connected to #ForFreedom and it will automatically appear on the campaign web page: freedom-defenders.com

Last but not least, use the #ForFreedom hashtag as often as possible! It will be the rally call to the internet-users who support the campaign. All the social messages that show #ForFreedom will appear on the campaign web page: freedom-defenders.org.

Our communication team will be contacting you or the communications people in your organisation. Please send them this message and ask them to respond and to join the campaign. Because “if we speak out, they walk out”. Your voice counts for a lot.
