FAISALABAD: A 26-year-old suspect died in mysterious circumstances at the Batala Colony police lockup on Monday night.

Police said Ahsan of Chiniot committed suicide by hanging himself but his family alleged that police strangled him.

Sources said Ahsan was in police custody in connection with a kidnap for ransom case.

The distressed family and their neighbours staged a protest demonstration at Akbarabad Chowk on Jail Road and threw traffic out of gear for one hour. The protesters exchanged harsh words with some passersby.

Some of the protesters told reporters that Ahsan was taken into custody five days ago and on Monday night a union council chairman had informed his family about his death.

They claimed that Ahsan, who worked in a factory in Faisalabad, had no criminal record and police strangled him. They demanded registration of a case against the policemen responsible for Ahsan’s death.

A police officer said Ahsan had gone to washroom and hanged himself using his trousers string. He said the body had been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
