| 14 November 2014
Paris, 5 November 2014 – FIDH is proud to support for the second consecutive year the International Women’s Film Festival – Herat, to be held from 8 to 12 November 2014 in Herat, Afghanistan. Organized by Armanshahr Open Asia, FIDH’s member organization in Afghanistan, and Roya Film House, the festival will present 42 films in official competition that were either created by women or that speak about women’s rights. 16 other films will also be screened outside of the competition.

“This festival is an excellent opportunity to highlight the vital roles of women in society, and some of the struggles that women face in Afghanistan and around the world,” said Karim Lahidji, FIDH President. “Respect for women’s rights is essential to a well-functioning and peaceful society, and FIDH is proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative.”

The first festival was inaugurated on 8 March 2013, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. 36 movies were screened and more than 1500 people attended the event, including many Afghan women. This second edition of the festival was also set to start on this symbolic date, but was eventually postponed to November due to the uncertain political situation in Afghanistan surrounding the presidential elections.
